Cigarette Case presented to J Hill, 1926

In sorting through my parents effects, I came across a very battered cigarette case that belonged to my maternal grandfather. It is nicely inscribed 'Presented to J Hill by stagehands Theatre Royal Hyde 1926'. I remember my mother telling me that my grandfather had been a stage manager at sometime in his career but whether that was in Hyde or later on I don't know. His real name was Osborne James Greenhill but he preferred to be known as Jim Hill and I can see why. My grandmother, Mabel, used to do crystal ball readings as Madam Zodiac but where that was I don't know. My mother carried on the theatrical tradition by being associated with Newham Arts Council in East London and organising all the amateur dramatic performances in our local church. I am more than happy for the cigarette case to go to a cause that my grandfather would support.

We are delighted that Dave has donated the cigarette case to Theatre Royal Onward. The artefact is a wonderful historical link that evokes a sense of the time and the people that were there.
